There is not a social vice as grotesque as the widespread prominence of conspiracy theories. Its no-brainer that our society is consumed by conspiracy theories. We all know several people in our social network who are either conspiracy believers, or downright conspiracy theorists. Sadly there is not a day that goes by without some act of violence, but even more bothersome is the way these conspiracies mushroom, legitimizing and supporting these heinous acts via some hidden agenda or invisible hand for that matter.OBL’s death is a good case in point, as soon as the incident was reported rumour mill started to spin, but this phenomenon isn’t new you could trace back our history and there you would find conspiracy theories regarding almost everything .
Starting with elucidating the term, conspiracy theories are generally ‘a society’s way of displaying the scepticism towards the other’ which in the case of conspiracy theories is the party with whom you have some sort of conflict with such as US,India,Jews etc. But if we divulge even deeper into the behavioural and social sciences part of it ‘myths and storytelling are ways through which people make sense’ out of dramatic lives that are at times too bitter a pill to swallow. And it is a myth in turn to which all conspiracy theories mainly boil down to.
Our infatuation with conspiracy theories Is like a ‘romantic attachment’ which is at times both dismissive and anxious .And part of the reason why our society’s obsession is so strong ,is because most of us( the citizens) feel ‘disempowered and ideologically aimless’ owing to of what has occurred to us since the last 64 years of our turbulent socio-political history .This uncertainty has rendered us unfairly vulnerable to all the propaganda especially the one used by monstrous conspiracy theorists. The monster feeds off of these weak points by projecting false image of possessing some secret knowledge providing much needed solace and bringing delusion of empowerment .The aim is mainly to confuse the citizens, divide the opposition, or rally support for some cause. This ever increasing canyon of mistrust and disconnect between our rulers and the people has also added fuel to the fire.
My answer to ridding our society of this plague is to ignore them & not engaging in active counter argument because over time they would die down due to lack of attention. It’s the high time when we as society need to start talking about shrouded issues ,taboos and start telling the bitter truth to the younger generation, accept where we went wrong and where we lack.
And to those dreaded conspiracy theorists ,even if you know world is going to cave in and you’re the only ‘saviour’ and keeper of the secret, let me tell you this you won’t even get a chance to make an omelette ;so instead of engaging in this futile rebellion ,do something constructive for people immediately around you by doing small deeds like picking up plates after dinner not littering around etc, speak a few kind and compassionate words. You can’t change the future but you can change the PRESENT lives of those around you.
